A striking example of early German modernism, this authentic Art Deco dinanderie metal vase was produced by the prestigious Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF) in Geislingen, Germany. Attributed directly to the design studio of the master goldsmith and decorative artist Paul Haustein (1880–1944), this piece dates from the peak of WMF’s groundbreaking Neue Kunstgewerbliche Abteilung (New Art-Commercial Department) c. 1928–1932.

The vase features a beautifully proportioned baluster form with a soft, flared rim. Its body is finished with WMF’s proprietary Ikora technique, a sophisticated process combining multi-layered heat treatments and chemical patination to establish a deep, painterly cocoa-brown backdrop. Acid-etched into the patinated surface is a gorgeous, stylized botanical pattern that exposes the radiant, glowing raw brass underneath, reminiscent of Haustein's highly celebrated organic design motifs.

Styling & Design Notes

With its tactile finish and graphic organic lines, this vessel serves as a commanding textural focal point. Its moody color palette bridges the gap between structured historicism and modern minimalism. It is an exceptional decorative addition for:

  • Mid-Century Modern & Bauhaus-inspired interiors seeking authentic, early 20th-century grounding.

  • Japandi or Minimalist styling, where the organic shapes and rich, patinated tones complement raw woods and warm textiles.

  • Display on low-profile credenzas, floating shelves, or styled as a standalone sculpture on a pedestal.

Condition & Authenticity

  • Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The original fire-applied dark patina is beautifully intact, exhibiting minor, age-appropriate surface wear and faint natural oxidation that lends incredible depth and character to the piece. Structurally sound with no dents or restorations.

  • Markings: Fully stamped on the reverse underside with the historic WMF "Tower Mark" (Turmmarke) enclosed in a circle, complete with the clean "GERMANY" export imprint. This confirms it was manufactured precisely during the 1925–1935 production era slated for international distribution.
